Nigerian superstar, Joeboy acknowledges the significance of the Grammy as a coveted award for artists worldwide, yet emphasizes the importance of not overlooking local awards and focusing solely on the Grammy.
“I think we should unapologetically be ourselves and also empower our institutions here in Africa…Grammys is a great award but it’s still an American award. It’s just seen as a global award because of its positioning but we make it look like it’s the biggest award an African artist can ever get”- Joeboy mentioned.
He goes on to highlight that if Americans had not invested their dedication into the Grammy, it would not have reached its current status.
Therefore, Africans should also show commitment to their award shows, enabling them to thrive in the future.
Bella Shmurda recently supported Joeboy’s stance by emphasizing the importance of supporting local institutions.
He expressed that artists should not disrespect Afrobeats by distancing themselves from the genre.
