Jesse Eisenberg’s film A Real Pain won the award for Best Screenplay at the recently concluded BAFTA Awards. During his acceptance speech, Eisenberg took a moment to thank his wife, Anna Strout, for her profound impact on both his life and the film. He humorously reflected, “I’m not a stupid person, but I’m an idiot,” before recounting how Anna had introduced him to the world through their travels, which became the inspiration for his award-winning screenplay.
Eisenberg continued by expressing how Anna’s worldview and Marxist-Leninist principles shaped the themes of grief and understanding in the movie. “You put every worthwhile thought in my head over the last 20 years, and I love you so much,” he concluded. A Real Pain, which explores global issues of grief and empathy, was one of the highlights of the night, solidifying Eisenberg’s talent not just as an actor but as a gifted screenwriter.
