Award-winning novelist Chimamanda Adichie made a surprising revelation about her name’s origin.
In an interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, she shared that her parents didn’t name her Chimamanda instead, she created the name herself.
Adichie was originally named Ngozi Grace by her parents. However, she felt the names were too common and didn’t reflect her identity.
She initially changed her name to Amanda, but during her undergraduate days, she discovered many people shared the same name.
To stand out, Adichie modified “Amanda” to “Chimamanda,” a unique and meaningful name. She desired a name that reflected her aspirations for greatness.
