Namibia has made history by swearing in its first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. A seasoned politician and former vice president, Nandi-Ndaitwah officially took office three months after winning the November 2024 elections. The swearing-in ceremony, which coincided with Namibia’s 35th Independence Anniversary, saw several African heads of state in attendance, including leaders from Angola, Kenya, South Africa, and Botswana. Her rise to the presidency marks a significant moment for Namibia as she becomes the country’s fifth president and first woman to hold the role.
Nandi-Ndaitwah, a member of the ruling South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), has a long history of political leadership. During the ceremony, outgoing president Nangolo Mbumba handed over the reins of power at the State House, solidifying her leadership. This milestone not only represents a new chapter in Namibia’s governance but also highlights the growing role of women in African politics.
